June Meeting – Potluck
Our June meetings always involves food of
some sort. This year we decided to do a
potluck. No pictures of the food sorry
you had to attend for that. We had 33
ladies who enjoyed an evening of fun and food, food first of course and then
two fun games hosted by Toni O.
Ruth T. did the name tag draw which was won
by Nancy L. We also did an “End of year”
draw which included all the names from the year that were submitted at each
meeting. The lovely gift was a can of
spray starch, a beautiful Sunbeam travel iron and a wool ironing mat. The winner was Marilyn C.
The first up for show and tell was Jodi
M. She showed us the second of her three
grocery bags from the June Tailor Quilt As You Go kit. These blues are almost too pretty to use on a
grocery bag. She will be very stylish
when she goes grocery shopping. Nice job
Jodi!
Rose-Marie J. shared with us what she calls
the ultimate UFO because she made the top 25 years ago. You can’t beat red, blue, and white for quilt
colors. Marilyn C. donated her basting
spray to Rose-Marie J. as a prize for having the oldest UFO. Congratulations Rose-Marie J.
This quilt is only 5 years in the making
says Rose-Marie J. This quilt is
intended as a wedding gift for one of her grandsons. This stunning blue and beige quilt was pieced
using the blue fabric from Rose-Marie’s stash and the beige fabric is from Christa
G.’s stash, isn’t that what friends are for?
Rose-Marie made the offer for anyone to shop her stash of blue fabric if
they are in need, she has lots to spare.
Beautiful work Rose-Marie.
Nancy L. is at it again with her bag
making. This lovely bag is made with
upholstery fabric and has lots of pockets.
I believe there are nine pockets in this beauty including one for your
rulers and such. The fabric came from
the sale section of Fabricville. What a
nostalgic fabric for a beautiful bag.
Bravo Nancy!!
Diane S. just finished a big project and
needed a little, easy project to work on to clear her head. She said she keeps all of the points that she
cuts off when doing quilts and she uses them for these little HST (half square
triangle) pieces. She quilted it on her
machine, put a label on it and did a very narrow binding. Hats off to you Diane for working with small
pieces!
Debby H. had her show and tell items in a lovely bag made by Kathy H.
Debby was happy to share with us that her machine was fixed and running again. Her first show and tell item other than the bag was a gorgeous pink baby quilt. There is pink and then there is this stunning shade of pink. Wow Debby nice color selection!!
Then Debby showed us a bag that she made with
a piano on one side and a guitar on the other side. She quilted it on the machine first and then sewed
the bag together, neat idea.
To pass the time while waiting for her machine to be fixed, she made this beautiful jelly roll quilt. She used grey thread when she was quilting it on her long arm and it looks lovely. Pretty colors Debby H.!
Janet M. showed us the tulip block that she made to contribute to the President’s challenge. Pretty purple flower. There are a few ladies in the guild who would love that flower because of the color. Thanks for your contribution Janet M.
Next item Janet M. had to share with us was a small piece that she worked on after our meeting where the program was all about embroidery. This lovely blue piece with white thread looks like she has been doing it for years. Nice work Janet M.
At the same guild meeting about embroidery Ruth T. gave us little embroidered pieces, Janet took hers and used it on the outside of a little needle holder. The embroidered piece was attached to what looks like doilies and a string to tie it closed.
Then Janet M. really got on a roll with the
embroidery and did a big stitch pillow.
The great thing about the big stitch is the actual big stitch.
Janet was having so much fun she decided to
do a little pouch using the big stitch as well.
She said it was fun and very relaxing.
Great pieces Janet M.!
Betty D. shared a lovely soft colored
fabric quilt. At our last meeting she
showed us one very similar to this one and mentioned she had a second panel so
this is it. She quilted it on her
domestic machine. Great job Betty!
Joyce
H. was next up with her beautiful in blue boats. She hand quilted a large quilt with the same
blocks and decided to make a baby quilt with the left over blocks. She quilted it herself at Cherie's Personal
Creations all by herself. Doing a great
job Joyce!
Joyce couldn't remember and we didn't mind
seeing this great quilt a second time.
The backing was flannel which makes this a cozy quilt. Good eye for color Joyce!
Just another example of how great Joyce H.
is at picking colors for quilts. This 3
yard quilt was quilted by Joyce on the longarm rental at Cherie's Personal
Creations shop. Joyce said if she can
quilt it herself so you can. Can't wait
to see what you whip up over the summer!
Joyce H. shared with us the importance of buying
that specialty ruler. Joyce purchased what
looked like an easy pattern by Swinging Girls and was using a fat quarter
bundle with a beach theme on it. The
pattern called for a Creative Grids ruler ($70 plus) to make the circles which
she thought was too expensive for one quilt.
She felt there was an easier and less expensive way to do it. Well she told us all about the obstacles that
she faced by not having that particular ruler.
She did a great job of improvising and overcoming the challenges. The quilt is going to be gorgeous when you
finish it Joyce!
We all chuckled along with Joyce at the
obstacles we overcome when quilting and the fact that she may have spent more
money on fabric to fix the problems than the cost of the ruler. Lesson learned. She wasn't going to let it discourage her so
she used the blocks to make a lovely bench pillow likely for her cottage.
Trish R. made a beautiful block for the President’s
challenge but I didn't get a picture of it, sorry Trish.
Trish R. had a similar hardship with her
project as Joyce H. Trish made a Byannie
"bowl me over bag 2.0" bag in teals.
She broke a pile of needles trying to get through it. The bag is gorgeous and it sounds like a
person needs some patience. Bravo for
not giving up Trish!
Carlinda D. has been busy. She said being on the workshop committee
means you get to try a lot of different techniques. The downside is that you never really get
them all completed. She was pleased to
share with us two finished workshop projects and one that she did for a
friend.
First up was the Dresden Village which was
from October 2023. She quilted a few triangles here and there to represent the
roof tops on the houses. It was fun
The second and the one she is most proud of
is the Teatime Placemats that she did with Sherida Giddings back in October
2022. She thanked Heather O. for the
idea of making it a table topper, Joyce for the suggestion of using the pink in
the placemat for the flange binding, and Cherie for renting her the long arm to
complete the project.
This quilt is for the last grandchild of
one of Carlinda’s coworkers. This was
quilted on the long arm at Cherie’s Personal Creations and was much more
relaxed than the first time.
